My name is Paula and I’m a Chilean actress and journalist living in New York City.
I’m very passionate about theatre, film and music and most recently comedy, in specific
stand-up comedy. That’s why I’m always looking for the best shows, events or festivals
here in the city, so I can share them with everyone who loves showbiz.
One of the things I love the most from New York is their entertainment scene. You can
literally watch a different show every day.
From theatre to comedy shows you can find a wide variety of things to do in the city. One of
my personal favorites is going to watch stand up comedy.
New York has many places where you can watch comics perform their best jokes in front of a live audience. You have the Comic Strip in the Upper East Side, where famous comedians used to perform like Jerry Seinfeld and Jimmy Fallon; the Gotham Comedy Club in Chelsea; Caroline’s on Broadway and Dangerfield’s among other. It is a big list.
Also, in Brooklyn there is an amazing comedy scene and great venues to watch stand up too, like
the Eastville or The Bell House. So, if you don’t want to go to Manhattan you can
totally get great shows there.
But my favorite by far is the Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village. They have two venues,
one in MacDougal Street and another one in West 3 rd street. I don’t really know what it is about that place that I love so much but I could probably go every week and never get bored. It’s also the most famous place to watch stand up comedy in Manhattan today and they have always a great line up of the best comics in the country.
Also —and one of the reasons why it is so cool— they sometimes have surprise performances from famous comedians from SNL or other comedy shows like Amy Schummer or Ray Romano who like to perform their new material there. I’ve seen Michael Che, T.J Miller, Hasan Minhaj, Judah Friedlander and Michelle Wolf among others.
The place has a really cool vibe too, that’s probably why I like it so much. It has many stages and all of them are set in a very dark bar so it feels intimate and also kind of hidden from the outside world, if that makes any sense.
It’s not cheap though. They do have a two items minimum per person, and some shows have a fee. Not all of them.
So, if you love comedy and specifically stand- up this is a great place to visit in New York.
It’s fun and different from the usual touristic things people normally do and you get good comedy quality. I guarantee that you will laugh and have a good time.
My only advice: Don’t go if you’re easily offended or if you are not the kind of people who enjoys laughing about yourself. Be prepared to become the object of a joke. That happened to me twice. And I loved it.
You can make a reservation online on their website and also watch their line up before.
Tickets get sold out very quickly so my advice is to make a reservation in advance and to get
there earlier so you are located in the better seats.
